Covid doubles UK’s internet use

February 4, 2021

The 2020 Covid pandemic saw people use the internet twice as much as in the previous year, as lockdown drove higher usage.

According to data from Openreach, which has stopped installing due to Covid, Boxing Day was the busiest day for broadband use. A mix of video calls to get in touch with family and friends, as well as TV streaming and gaming downloads contributed to the spike, the company said.

Online gaming also had a big impact on the UK’s broadband consumption, with many of the major data spikes focussed around updates to popular PlayStation, PC and Xbox games – including Call of Duty and Fortnite.

Many people either running businesses or working from home in rural areas that cannot access fast internet speeds are unaware if they can achieve faster speeds with the right connectivity.
