What does ‘flexible working’ actually mean for your business?

February 1, 2022

Flexible working means giving your employees more flexibility to choose where, how and when they want to work.

Covid-19 has been a huge game-changer for businesses and the way that their employees are now working.

Working from home during the pandemic has led to a new era of productivity, inclusiveness, and job satisfaction.

However, it has increased the amount of people who now want to work flexible hours so that they have more time for a work-life balance.

Flexible working can mean getting more work done from home or on the go – studies have shown that people are happy to work full-time hours but still want their flexibility.

So, what is the solution?

There are many solutions to flexible working – such as staggered hours meaning that you can start work early and finish early. Or compressed hours – so that you work your full-time hours over a four-day period or working from home, meaning that you are eliminating your commute completely.

Many businesses may offer these types of flexibility as they know full-time hours will still be fulfilled, leaving you and the company happy.

But what flexible working can do for you and your business?

By implementing flexible working for employees means an increase of job satisfaction, as 90% of workers say more flexible work arrangements and schedules will boost morale, and 73% of employees said flexible working arrangements increased their satisfaction at work.

Flexible working has also shown an improvement in the recruitment process. For any business, recruiting and retaining talented employees is a top priority, and studies have found that flexible working improves retention and boosts recruitment efforts. According to a Zenefits study, 77% of employees would now list flexible working as a primary consideration when looking for future job opportunities.

Now that restrictions are starting to ease and employees are returning back to normality, what does this mean for future working?

A study found that 34% of people expect that staff will only be working 1-2 days a week from September and a 41% expect people to be working 2-3 days a week, which is a dramatic change pre-pandemic and shows that most companies will now be expected to do the same.
